Recruitment Awards 2008
By Steve Anderson-Dixon,
Managing Director of Bristol News and Media

These honours have highlighted the outstanding individuals and firms we
have in the recruitment sector and who make it the success it is.

Much of Bristol’s success as a regional business powerhouse is due to the quality of people recruited to drive forward commerce in the area.

One of the most critical characteristics of a successful firm is the quality of its staff – this is why we are celebrating the success of the recruitment industry in bringing Bristol to the forefront of the region’s business community.

As head of the judging panel, I and my fellow judges faced many difficult decisions about which of the highly talented individuals and companies should win each of the 12 categories.

A value-driven approach to resourcing

Like all companies, AXA aims to attract and retain the best candidates in the market. But what sets us apart is being the only Insurance Company to be listed in the Sunday Times Top 20 Best Big Companies to Work For in the UK for 2008. This demonstrates that our employees think and act in a way that reflects our company values: care, competence, reliability and keeping our customers at the heart of everything we do.

Nowhere are these values more evident than in our own Resourcing team. We continue to attract new people to AXA through a variety of creative and traditional routes. We’ve experienced huge success in our Refer a Friend scheme, for instance, and are on track to saving the company almost £¾ million this year through this one initiative. We have also created huge investment return on our direct attraction strategies that drive candidates to our AXA.co.uk/careers web site.

AXA’s business continues to grow through acquisitions and internal diversification, and this allows us to stay agile and create great internal promotion opportunities for our current employees. It also allows us to learn from new

team members who bring experience of life in other companies to strengthen and benefit our knowledge and generate new ways to support our customers.

As you would expect, the Resourcing team stays extremely close to our business. This not only gives them a deep understanding of evolving recruitment needs, but also enables them to identify local business news or developments. They can respond with proactive strategies aimed at attracting and redeploying desirable candidates at the earliest opportunity.

AXA’s ambition is to become the preferred company and employer of choice and, in my opinion, we are well on our way to attaining our goal. I look forward to helping the company achieve this success through our high performing Resourcing team. It is a team that continually looks at ways of improving service to our customers, and a recent line manager survey generated highly favourable feedback.

As part of our pursuit of continuous improvement, we use Six Sigma project management methodology to review and enhance our processes. We also work very closely with our colleagues in the HR Talent team to provide robust succession planning, regularly reviewing high performers to ensure we are developing and retaining a strong pipeline of future leaders.
