Watching the money
THE name may conjure up visions of legions of pin-striped accountants sitting behind dusty ledgers counting endless columns of figures but the Audit Commission does a job that affects all of us.
It goes far beyond counting figures to ensuring that the taxes we pay are spent economically, efficiently and effectively in a wide range of areas from local government to fire and rescue services, and from criminal justice to health services.
The Audit Commission is an independent organisation that works with 11,000 bodies that have a combined spending power of more than £18 billion.
Its headquarters are at Millbank Tower in central London but it has regional offices across the country including one at Stoke Gifford, just north of Bristol, which covers an area stretching from Cornwall across to Kent and up to Oxfordshire.
“When it comes to recruitment, the Commission wants to reinforce just how vital its work is to improving public services and the range of career opportunities available for all different types of people across the organisation” said a spokeswoman.
“We also want to ensure that the people working for us reflect the community they serve, demystify their work and show how everyday people are at the heart of our success.
“Our mission is to be a driving force in the improvement of public services and we want staff who are committed to that line of
thinking.”
Working with the recruitment communications agency Thirty Three, the commission has developed a new employee communications brand called Everybody Counts.
“It’s a simple statement, which encompasses just how much the commission values its people,” said the spokeswoman. “It refers to the numbers the Commission is best known for, while broadening the context, introducing real people and showing how the Commission’s work improves lives right across the community.
“From the humble beginnings as a recruitment brochure showing the human face of the Commission and encouraging applications from a more diverse range of applicants, this approach grew into a comprehensive employee communications brand and the focus of the recruitment website,” she said.
Richard Bunkham, head of recruitment at the Audit Commission, said it was doing all it could to be an open, welcoming and empowering place to work. |
