Improving the lives of disadvantaged children through activities, events and funding vital equipment sums up the work of rugby charity Wooden Spoon.
Children from all walks of life, who suffer from mental or physical disabilities or who have socially disadvantaged backgrounds, are supported by Wooden Spoon.
It all began on a fateful day in Dublin in 1983 when England’s Five Nations season ended in disaster with defeat by Ireland, leaving them languishing at the bottom of the table. A group of English supporters were presented with a wooden spoon by their Irish opponents to mark the historic occasion. On returning home, the proposal to play golf for the spoon attracted the interest of fellow English supporters. More than 100 people attended the golf day at Farnham in Surrey, and by the end of the
evening, £8,450 had been raised. The funds were cashed in for a minibus purchased for the Park Special Needs School in Aylesbury. And so the charity was born.
The Wooden Spoon now has patronage from the four rugby home unions and patronage from the Princess Royal.
Registration charity number: 326691.
Cheques should be made payable to Wooden Spoon.
