THE Great South West Walk proved so popular last year that another, smaller section has been planned for this summer.
To finalise the fundraising campaign and to take the total amount of money raised to £200,000, the Western Morning News has planned a 10-mile circular walk from Jennycliff, near Plymouth, to Wembury and back, taking in part of the South West Coast Path and inland walkways.
As with last year, Foot Anstey Solicitors has stepped up to the starting line and sponsored the one-day trek.
As sponsors of the first walk on August 1 last year, they put in a massive amount of effort, people and money to the three selected charities.
The RNLI, Wooden Spoon and Macmillan Cancer Support will again be the beneficiaries of this one-off walk.
John Westwell, head of Foot Anstey’s business and public sector group, takes up the story of why the company has come forward again.
“We have always supported charities for children and young people, so the Wooden Spoon comes up on our agenda as being a great recipient. As a company, we are very much into keeping the South West in focus as so much of our business is in the region.
“Our position as one of the largest law firms in the South West has been strengthened by our recent mergers in Truro and Plymouth and we are committed to supporting people and businesses throughout the region.”
Last year’s fundraising efforts did not pass without a few problems. Blisters, sunburn and a flat tyre on the support bus all tested the team from Foot Anstey but, as Mr Westwell explained, it was well worth the effort.
He added: “We raised £2,000 last year and I would hope that the fundraising campaign can achieve its overall target. As a firm, we now have a lot more people in the business, something like 415. We have taken on 55 new lawyers in addition to those who have joined the practice through mergers so I think we will do our utmost to raise more money.”
The Great South West Walk will set out on May 18 and everyone is welcome to join in, so to register visit www.greatsouthwestwalk.co.uk or telephone Jan Quirk on 01752 765557.
