The whole day of 15th August from Barnstaple to Westward Ho! is sponsored and led by
a champion!
Who is also trying to take part in all of the legs during August
We are talking about former Grand National winning jockey and now trainer Jimmy Frost.
We have to be a bit fluid with Jimmy as he has to fit in this fund raising event with
the tight schedule of races that
he and his owners have over the coming months.
Jimmy is raising money for all three charities by appealing to his owners and members
of the public to step forward
and dig deep in their pockets. He is a man who is
constantly on the move, not just around the courses of Britain but
out with the horses
at all times of the day. We caught up with him on his mobile phone whilst riding out
in the country
lanes around his stables near Buckfastleigh. Just in case anyone is
worried, he was on a hands free horse!
'I am asking the owners of my horses, the syndicates and the racing fans I know, to
sponsor me for the leg or walk
with me on the 15th August,' said Jimmy above the clatter
of hooves. 'I have at any one time around thirty five horses
at my stables and there are
plenty of opportunities at race meetings and events to ask for help for these charities.'
Jimmy was successful at Aintree in the 1989 Grand National on Little Polveir and has gone
on to build up his own
training stables. But who can own a horse?
'Anyone who has a cheque book!' said Jimmy with a laugh. 'I see
syndicates from all walks
of life being put together. From a few pounds a week to the really expensive end of the
market, it's just as much fun no matter what and sometimes, just sometimes, when you get
it right, it can be a real
money spinner. It's a sport that caters for all.'
Jimmy also wants to organise a sports night with a question and answer session with him
but again that will be
announced a little later. Fitting in the walk will mean breaking
away from a strict routine on the gallops and journeying
to courses.
'I am still pretty fit,' he told us. 'Riding keeps me toned and tackling a walk like this
should be fairly easy for
me. I am committed to the 15th but am hoping to support other
days if time permits. It would be great to see people
join me on the coastal path in North
Devon.'
Our thanks to Jimmy Frost and to the people who we know will be generous enough to sponsor
him. At a recent race meeting at Newton Abbot, Frost fans came forward to sponsor him and
to register for the walk in general so we look
forward to see them all on The Great South
West Walk.
Jimmy has in the past already raised funds for the Wooden Spoon, a charity whose virtue linking sport with business he completely identifies with and is particularly pleased to be associated with the RNLI and the Macmillan Cancer Support through the Western Morning News, come and join him!
