THIS summer will be remembered as the dawn of a new era for traditional British pubs when they joined forces in going completely smoke-free. Devon and Cornwall’s leading brewer and pub company – St Austell Brewery – says the introduction of the new rules in July went like clockwork for its 166 pubs, inns and hotels. Already, it is seeing how the clean, fresh atmosphere of smoke-free pubs is attracting new customers and opening the market to people looking for good food and family days out. In many establishments, a programme of deep cleansing took place to give premises a completely fresh start to the new smoke-free era. “For customers who wish to smoke, more than £1 million has been invested in the brewery estate, with attractive outdoor areas including patios, decking and gazebos developed at many of our pubs.” Just some examples of the way the brewery’s pubs have adapted to, and embraced, the changes include Fort Inn in Newquay, which refurbished its restaurant and children’s area, as well as installing umbrellas, heaters and lights outside. The Sharksfin at Mevagissey is another excellent example which re-opened in May with a new-look, new menu, open-plan kitchen, leather sofas and an up-market lounge area. The changes are not just restricted to family and food pubs. An ‘outside oasis’ has been created at the Western Inn, St Austell, as well as at the Sloop Inn, Bantham, the Barley Sheaf, Liskeard, the Jubilee Inn, in Pelynt and the Old Smithy, in Ivybridge.
