news archive: Heat 7 - We can’t believe our success at the first attempt

Jazzy B

Lisa Wilkinson

A NEWCOMER to the Hull music scene scooped the top spot in the latest round of Talent Trail.
Jazzy B, 26, of Westcott Street, east Hull, secured his place in the next round of the contest with a mixture of upbeat numbers and ballads.
Jazzy told the Mail he had recently moved to Hull from Withernsea, and although he had spent many years working in holiday parks, his career in the music industry was just beginning.
Heat seven, held at West Hull Liberal Club, Coltman Street, saw five acts battle it out for a place in the semi-finals.
But only two could go through, and the judges took little time in deciding on Jazzy B and solo singer Lisa Wilkinson.
Speaking after the show, they both told the Mail they had been shocked to make it through to the next stage of the competition.
Lisa said: “I just can’t believe it, I’m shocked and I’m happy.”
Jazzy said: “I was surprised, I really didn’t expect to go through. I have never entered anything like this before and I’m glad me and Lisa both got through.”
Jazzy kicked off the contest onTuesday night with a rousing rendition of Shake A Tail Feather by Ray Charles.
He then performed Mr Bojangles, recently covered by Robbie Williams, and You Raise Me Up, made famous in the UK by Westlife.

Lisa was the last to perform, but thanks to good support from her friends and family, overcame her nerves to raise the roof with her version of Dark Lady by Cher, Hanky Panky by Madonna and Love Is A Battlefield by Pat Benatar.
Like her fellow semi-finalist, Lisa, 37, of Holderness Road, east Hull, was performing in Talent Trail for the first time, and hopes the competition will kick start her singing career.
Also performing in the heat were Kenny Allanson, 62, of Anlaby Road, a regular entrant in Talent Trail, who performed All That Matters To Me by Curtis Stigers and My Kind Of Girl by Matt Monroe and Dream Lover by Bobby Darin.
Claire Louise, 18, a barmaid at the West Hull Liberal Club, took time out of her shift to perform a high-tempo set of It’s A Heartache by Bonnie Tyler, Sex Bomb by Tom Jones and Hot Stuff by Donna Summer.
John Kitching, 57, of WestbourneAvenue West, west Hull, showed off his guitar talent to perform Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash, Dirty Old Town by The Pogues, and an original number called Foxhole.
There are just three spaces still to be filled for the Talent Trail heats. Anyone interested should fill in the application form.
Talent Trail 2008 is supported by the Mail and Reel Cinemas and is raising money for the Mail’s charity of the year, Hull Animal Welfare Trust.
