'Comfortable on stage':
Jamie Barnwell-Edinboro

THE first hopefuls will tonight step on to the stage bidding to make it all the way to the Talent Trail final.

The first heat is to be held at the Cherokee Club in Askew Avenue, west Hull.

It starts a competition that will lead one would-be star through semi-finals and finally to the stage at Hull City Hall to take the Talent Trail crown.

Entries have poured in for this year’s event, with twice as many people signed up before the first heat compared with recent years.

There are also many new acts taking part this year, with three quarters of the people signed for the first time.

One of the hopefuls taking part is football coach Jamie Barnwell-Edinboro.

By combining the talents of three greats – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Junior – he hopes to channel the spirit of the Rat Pack.

He is hoping singing the Dean Martin classic, Ain’t That A Kick In The Head, will prevent judges giving him the red card.

He said: “It’s something I have always loved, that kind of music.

“When you’re doing something like Talent Trail it’s important to be comfortable on stage and that’s the kind of thing I’m comfortable with.”

Last year Jamie, 32, of west Hull, made it to the semi-finals as one half of acoustic duo The Snow Jets.

He said: “We did it last year for a bit of experience and a lot of fun. I enjoy doing that stuff.

“I just love to get up on stage and sing songs and if I go through that will be a bonus.

“Singing those sorts of songs, if I get to City Hall it would be an ideal venue. It would be
absolutely fantastic.”

There will be 18 heats and four semi-finals for acts to work their way through before they make it to the grand final at Hull City Hall at the end of April.

This year, there are clubs throughout the city waiting to hold the competition.

For the first time Talent Trail will be coming to east Hull where the Willows, Chambers, and Belmont Social Club are due to feature.

Heats for this year’s contest – sponsored by Reel Cinemas – will also be held at Dene Park Club in north Hull and the Cherokee Club, West Hull Liberal Club and the Walton Street Club in west Hull.

And this year, the acts will not only have the chance to shine on the stage at Hull City Hall, as their performances will also be broadcast on the big screen in Queen Victoria Square.

The Mail will also provide coverage of every heat and videos will also be available to view on the Talent Trail website.

Wannabe stars hoping to enter Talent Trail must be aged 16 or over.

Previous Talent Trail winners are not permitted to re-enter, but anyone else can have a try.
