AS SEASONED artists brush up their acts for this year’s Talent Trail contest, new faces are preparing to give them a run for their money.
Acoustic guitarist Andy Unwin is used to playing gigs at pubs like the Manchester Arms in Scale Lane, city centre.
Mr Unwin is just one of the acts entering the Mail’s competition for the first time this year, and is getting ready to show those who have become part of the Talent Trail furniture what he can do.
He said: “I’m looking forward to the competition. I’ve just got to prepare myself now for it.
“I think I’ve got as good a chance as anyone else. I’ve been singing for a long time and playing in local bands. But this is the first time I’ve been in

something like this.”
Mr Unwin, a 28-year-old joiner, of High Street, city centre, was entered into the contest by Carol Sparkes, the landlady at the Manchester Arms.
The guitarist has been playing for 12 years, mostly in bands, but more recently on his own.
He plays indie-rock, including songs by Paul Weller, Coldplay and Ocean Colour Scene.
He said: “I think my material will probably be quite similar to the sets I play at the Manchester Arms, but I expect a wider audience.
“I’m used to having other people on the stage with me. It can be a lonely experience being up there on my own.”

videos of the best acts, the contest will also be shown on this website and on the big screen in the centre of Hull.
After 18 heats and four semi-finals, the top acts will face each other at Hull City Hall in the spring. Heats for this year’s contest – sponsored by Reel Cinemas – will be held at six venues around the city – Belmont Social Club, Chambers Club and one to be announced, all in east Hull, the Inglemire Club and the Dene Park Club in north Hull and the Cherokee club in west Hull.
The overall winner will be presented with a prize of £2,000 and a Talent Trail trophy. Anyone wishing to enter Talent Trail must be aged 16 or over. Previous winners are not permitted to re-enter.
