Talent Trail
news archive: A musical talent hidden for years

Anthony Craven

WHILE most people associate Talent Trail with singing, acts from across the spectrum of entertainment are encouraged to enter.
This year, a 78-year-old harmonica player, taking part in the contest for the first time, is hoping to show audiences something different.
Anthony Craven, of Elstronwick, near Hedon, has been playing the harmonica for the past 40 years, but it was only recently that he decided to reveal his talent.
Now, after performing once locally and at a Harmonica Convention, the former medical representative is looking forward to airing his talent for the Mail’s competition.

He said: “For about 40 years I have played the harmonica for my own pleasure. I haven’t the faintest idea why I started playing. It’s just something I wanted to do.
“I kept it pretty quiet and it’s only recently people have realised I do play it.
“I’m just entering the competition for the experience and for the fun of it.
“I did amateur acting for 30 years and my wife persuaded me to join the Roos and South Holderness Singers.”
Mr Craven is looking forward to the contest. He said: “I read about a chap playing guitar and he sounded pretty good to me. I think they will all be pretty good.”
People taking part in this year’s

event can look forward to seeing their efforts shown on the big screen in Queen Victoria Square, city centre. Coverage of the event will be printed in the Mail and on this website, where the videos will also be available to view.
Acts hoping to make it to the grand final at Hull City Hall will first have to battle their way through 18 heats and four semi-finals, against others hoping to show what they can do.
Heats for this year’s contest – sponsored by Reel Cinemas – will be held at six venues around the city, Belmont Social Club, Chambers Club and The Willows club, all in east Hull, the Inglemire Club and the Dene Park Club in north Hull and the Cherokee Club in west Hull.
