FOR years, she trained as an opera singer.
But Serena Williams has shown there is more strings to her bow as she won heat 13 of Talent Trail 2008 to progress to the semi-finals.
Serena, of Endike Lane, north Hull, who switched from opera to pop music when she was 15, entered the competition for the first time as a solo artist.
Now 22, she entertained the audience at the Cherokee Club in west Hull withperformances of As If We Never Said Goodbye, from the musical Sunset Boulevard, I Who Have Nothing, by Shirley Bassey, and Where the Boys Are, by Connie Francis.
She said: “I feel amazing. It has been a really good heat.
“Everybody has been brilliant and I feel so lucky to get through. I really enjoyed it.
“I’m really looking forward to the semi-final. I’m just trying to think about dress and songs now.”
Joining her in the semi final is Jamie A, of Leeds, who sang That’s My Goal, by Shayne Ward, You Raise Me Up, by Westlife, and My Way, by Frank Sinatra.

It was his first time in Talent Trail, which is sponsored by Reel Cinemas.
“I saw the competition in the club review magazine in Leeds and thought it would be good to give it a go,” he said.
“It’s been a fantastic heat. It was very, very close.”
Seven acts took part, including theentertaining Rockin’ Bob, of Lincoln, who had the audience singing and clapping.
Wilberforce College student Sophie Jo, 17, of east Hull, impressed with her three numbers in her first time in the competition.
Also singing for the first time were the Eskimo Kittens. The group, comprising Sarah Thomas, 19, Louisa Jones, 19, and Emilee Wainwright, 18, are all university students taking a dance course.
Their set included an acoustic version of Rihanna’s Umbrella.
Chris Clarkson, of Anlaby, who sang hits including You Raise Me Up by Westlife, and Adam Storey, 18, of Wold Road, Hull, who performed Queen’s Crazy Little thing Called Love, completed the line-up.
