ORIGINALITY and impressive musical talent proved a winning formula for Chantal Maltby. The 18-year-old, of Bridlington, scooped the top spot in heat 16 of Talent Trail 2008, held at Dene Park Sports and Social Club in Dunswell.
Chantal played the keyboard and performed Beautiful by Christina
Aguilera and her own song, Hard Times.
She stepped away from the instrument to finish her set with Chasing Pavements by Adele.
Chantal is studying A-levels in music, travel and tourism and English language at Scarborough Sixth Form College. She reached the semi-finals of Talent Trail last year.
She said: “I am so amazed. Everyone was so good. I wasn’t expecting it at all.”
Father-of-two Dan Furniss, of Sutton Park, east Hull, also secured a place in the semi-finals.The 32-year-old impressed the judges with Crying by Roy Orbison, Higher And Higher by Jackie Wilson and Try A Little Tenderness by Otis Reading.
Dan, a warehouse worker, has been singing on stage since November last year.
He said: “I didn’t expect to come anywhere in this competition.I’m made up. Singing has always been a passion.”

Tracy Fisher, 18, of Ruskington, Lincolnshire, performed Ugly by the Sugababes, Black Horse And The Cherry Tree by KT Tunstall and I Think We’re Alone Now by Tiffany.
Ruth Scott, 23, of Cottingham, belted out Knock On Wood by Eddie Floyd, My Girl by the Temptations and Crazy by Patsy Cline.
Duo Charlotte Boyce, 17, and Arthur Nutley, 18, both of Beverley, also performed Black Horse And The Cherry Tree by KT Tunstall, an acoustic version of This Love by Maroon 5 and Hit The Road Jack by Ray Charles.
Sarah Welbourn, 27, of Lincolnshire, performed as Sky and belted out Dusty Springfield’s Son Of A Preacher Man, Material Girl by Madonna and Because Of You by Kelly Clarkson.
Marianne Owens, 27, of New Bridge Road, east Hull, sparkled on stage while singing That Old Devil Called Love by Alison Moyet, Honey, I’m Home, by Shania Twain and I Who Have Nothing by Shirley Bassey.
John Rhodes, 70, of Beverley High Road, north Hull, took to the stage as John Valente and performed Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler, I Believe by David Whitfield and Bobby Darin’s Mack The Knife.
