Ferens Art:
SINCE it opened in 1927, the award winning Ferens Art Gallery, in Queen Victoria Square, Hull, has combined internationally-renowned permanent collection displays with a thriving programme of temporary exhibitions.
A unique children’s gallery is one of the highlights of a lively education and events programme that includes tours, talks and art workshops. The gallery’s first-class permanent collection of paintings and sculpture spans the medieval period to the present day. European Old Masters, particularly Dutch and Flemish, portraiture, marine paintings, modern and contemporary British art, including video, are among the strengths. Highlights include masterpieces by Frans Hals, Antonio Canaletto, Stanley Spencer, David Hockney, Helen Chadwick and Gillian Wearing.
Tours such as the Highlights of the Ferens Art Gallery Collection are available. Tours run between 10.30am and 3.30pm most weekdays and various weekends.
And if you fancy a break while at the gallery, its bustling café offers good food and drink in a unique, cultural setting. In the summer, visitors can dine al-fresco on the terrace.
Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm and Sunday, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. Last admission is 15 minutes prior to closing.

RATHER than walking round an art gallery, having a look at paintings, a lot of people prefer to take an interest in unusual, contemporary arts. If this sounds right up your street, Crescent Arts, in Scarborough, would be a great place to visit.
Crescent Arts aims to support and promote contemporary visual arts practice, nurture local artistic talent, and enable all to access the arts irrespective of social circumstances, difference or ability. It offers a diverse and stimulating exhibition programme, subsidised studios and open access facilities for artists and has opportunities for learning, training and development for artists, visitors, young people and all other members of the local community.

Beverley Gallery:
FOR classic paintings and interesting art exhibitions, visit Beverley Art Gallery, in Champney Road, Beverley.
The gallery is located in the heart of Beverley, and is a fine example of a purpose-built Edwardian art gallery as well as being the only arts heritage facility of its type in the region. The gallery opened to the public in 1910. Since its inception, the gallery has worked tirelessly to provide exhibitions and activities that have inspired and engaged the local community.
The gallery holds the largest collection of works by the celebrated early 20th Century artist, Frederick Elwell as well as a renowned series of Victorian and Edwardian paintings “The Champney Bequest”. It also develops a temporary exhibition programme from national and regional touring shows, and themed exhibitions curated in-house.
Beverley Art Gallery is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9.30am to 5pm, Tuesday and Thursday, from 9.30am to 8pm and Saturday from 9am to 4pm.

York Art Gallery:
YORK Art Gallery combines a distinguished history of displaying fine paintings and ceramics with a modern-day welcome to all through a busy calendar of exhibitions, events and outreach work. Paintings are displayed in six areas over the two floors of the gallery and are divided into themes such as portraits and landscapes.

WEIRD and wonderful contemporary art is certainly something you should take time out to see. And what better place to go than the Shaw Galleries in Craven Court, Skipton, North Yorkshire – the county’s largest supplier of contemporary fine art.
