Market Shopping:
IF YOU are sick of trawling the shops, rummaging through rail after rail of clothes and getting pushed about everywhere, why not visit a local market?
Not only are markets fun to shop at but you can find some weird and wonderful things to buy that you just can’t get elsewhere. Whether you are looking for home-grown vegetables, fruit and flowers or rugs and picture frames you need travel no further than your traditional town market.
In Lincoln, for example, every day except Sunday is a market day, and the city also boasts a farmers’ market on the first Friday in the month at City Square, and on the third Saturday in the month, at Bailgate. Lincoln also turns festive on the first full weekend of December with hundreds of stalls selling fare at the city’s annual Christmas market. This market started in 1982 and now takes over most of the Cathedral Quarter of Lincoln. In fact, back in 1982 there were just 14 stalls, compared to more than 300 now.
Elsewhere, historic York also has its own regular set of stallholders offering their wares in Newgate Market, seven-days-a-week from 9am to 4pm and between 9am and 4.30pm on Sundays.
And in the East Riding, Beverley’s Saturday and Wednesday markets cover a large area in the town centre.
