The category

The Excellence in Marketing Award is designed to recognise the development and implementation of imaginative and successful marketing activities within the last 12 months. "Activities" could relate to an overall marketing strategy or the implementation of a specific campaign for a product, service or organisation. Whilst the traditional forms of marketing should not be discounted, the sponsors are looking for innovation and originality.

Please enter the number of employees including contractors on the Entry Form. The judges will place your company in the small/medium or large division of the category as appropriate.

Please write your overall description in no more than 500 words (fewer are perfectly acceptable) and then separately answer the questions below. If you want to attach supporting materials such as photos, leaflets, testimonials, etc. please do so.

What the judges are looking for

We want to hear from companies that have used effecting marketing to achieve sales growth. The campaign may have been to generate sales leads, or to develop the corporate brand, but there must have been a demonstrable improvement to the top line.

Specific questions to answer

  1. What was the target audience of the marketing activity, and what was the desired objective in changing the way that the audience thought, felt, or acted?
  2. What was the 'call to action' message within the activity?
  3. What market research did you undertake prior to starting the activity?
  4. How did you measure the effectiveness of the marketing activity?
  5. If you have a sales team, how were they kept up-to-date of the marketing activity?

About the judges

Martin Stanton, chief executive of Marsland – the Edenbridge-based aluminium and PVCu windows, doors and conservatories company will be judging the Excellence in Marketing category.

Martin has a background in sales and marketing which stretches back more than 30 years. He began his career as a scientist at the National Physical Laboratory, where he researched the development of artificial intelligence.

During the 1980s and 1990s he worked as a strategic marketing analyst for PA Management Consultants, as well as spending nine years as marketing director of local company Feedback Data. Since 2000, working as a consultant with EMC Management Consultants, he has developed marketing strategies and tactics for many clients, and delivered his palette of 'practical' training courses for both sales and marketing.

"Over the past eight years, I've concentrated on improving the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises across the South East," Martin explains. "So I am really looking forward to discovering how local companies are utilising effective marketing."

Marsland has a history that stretches back to 1959, when it was established as a company carrying out architectural aluminium work. Today, the company provides windows and doors to many large developers and contractors, while it also delivers high quality windows, doors and conservatories for residential houses within the Kent and East Sussex area.
