Quality in former chapel

AS the final phase of this exciting and innovative development deep in the south Devon countryside nears completion, builders are putting the finishing touches to the luxurious indoor swimming pool and leisure complex which will occupy the former chapel.

There are only four apartments still available, including the spectacular show home, from the conversion of the former monastery at Wood Barton near Loddiswell, each offering spacious accommodation.

Surrounded by 80 acres of unspoiled farmland that rolls down to the banks of the River Avon where residents will have fishing rights and could keep their own horses, the setting is tranquil and secluded yet only a short drive from main transport links and very accessible.

Cutting-edge design is matched by high-quality finishes including contemporary kitchens fitted with top of the range appliances such as a waste compactor and little butler’s sink to produce instant hot water. Tiling and sanitaryware come from the Spanish designer Porcelanosa and are the ultimate in luxury and style.

The monastery was built at the turn of the last century by a group of Trappist monks fleeing persecution in their native Normandy, using granite and stone brought down from Dartmoor.

But within 20 years the buildings were left to decay as they were free to return to France once more.

In the 1980s the estate was owned by renowned racehorse trainers David and Jennifer Barons and was home to Grand National winner Seagram.

Owners Steve and Jackie Buckle have worked closely with local architects Andrew Lethbridge and Anna Kalnars to create homes which work with the historic fabric of the building but provide all the latest comforts of 21st century life. The former wooden chapel will not only have a swimming pool but a spa, sauna, steam room and gym and there is also going to be an all-weather tennis court.

The gardens will be landscaped and contain ample parking and garaging facilities and be managed by a full-time concierge. The lofty interiors offer up to 4,000 square feet of living space using state-of-the art modern lighting.

Fully integrated SMART technology provides entertainment and lighting, and ingenious ‘pods’ create extra rooms in the spacious interiors for cloakrooms and laundries. There is even going to be a Wood Barton television channel keeping owners up to date on such details as fishing conditions or offering health and fitness tips.

In the four-bedroom showhome – on the market at £1,125,00 – an impressive cantilevered granite staircase links the three floors and, as in the other apartments, huge sash windows have been replaced by hand-crafted double-glazed copies, wired for remote-controlled drapes and blinds.

Prices start at £725,000 for the remaining apartments, ranging from three to five bedrooms, and the agent is Marchand Petit (01548 857588).
