Red Rubies look forward
The Red Ruby Devon, a native breed of the South West, is looking forward to continued
expansion in 2007. This docile breed of cattle, with its richly coloured distinctive coat
has increased in popularity since the dawn of the new Millennium.
The breeds natural attributes of an ability to graze natural vegetation and
efficiently/economically convert it into outstanding connoisseur beef fits in well with
“new” farming. Now that farmers are being encouraged by consumers and government
to use sustainable environmentally friendly and organic farming systems the Red Ruby
Devon has again been recognised for its compatibility to those systems.
Andrew Lane the Breed Society Secretary comments that the Red Ruby breed has a
history stretching back for centuries, in fact it was this breed that left Plymouth with the
Pilgrim Fathers to colonise North America (where the breed still thrives). The Devon
Cattle Breeders Society, which administers the Herd Book for pedigree cattle, has seem
its membership treble over the last six years as more and more farmers rediscover these
docile, easily managed, beef animals.
The Society has planed several events for the year starting with a Spring Show & Sale of
animals to be held at Taunton Market on Thursday 22nd March where it anticipates that
120 of the breeds finest will be on sale. Catalogues for this along with details of other
events and places to buy the meat are available from the Society office 01837 810942
