Philip James has been trimming cows feet professionally for over fifteen years, and currently trims over 10,000 cows annually.
Todays intensive large dairy farms demand a modern approach to lameness prevention and control. The service we provide fulfils this by having the capacity to cope with large numbers using two hydraulic crushes, coupled with the established five step Dutch trimming method perfected over many years trimming. Our focus is on preventing lameness occurring, we know from existing customers that regular trimming hugely reduces lameness incidents, resulting in happy, long living lame free cows.We are proud to be responsible for the foot care of many top herds in Cornwall and Devon and believe that we can help any herd regardless of size or management system .
1. THE PROBLEM - LAMENESS
Lame cows are a pain, literally.
They don’t milk.
They don’t eat.
They don’t get in calf.
They don’t pay the bills.
2. THE CAUSE IS COMPLEX
It could be:
Nutritional
Environmental
Genetic
Management
Or most likely a combination of all these areas.
3. THE COST IS MASSIVE
Loss of milk production (for example, 1000 litres@ 17p/litre = £170), Vet and med bills and extended calving index- due to reduced fertility.
Or a severe case of lameness that results in culling, will amount to between £700 - £1000.
A 20% clinical lameness level will result in a loss of 0.5 pence per litre. (Source Kingshay Farming Trust)
4. THE SOLUTION
An accurate diagnosis of the problem, coupled with action to correct the cause.
Not all herds are the same. Suggested trimming patterns:
5000 litre herds once yearly
6000-8000 litre herds twice yearly
8000+ litre herds three times a year
Remember, as herd managers we must have a modern approach to lameness, prevention and control.
5. THE FUTURE
Dairying has a tough but exciting future. To survive and prosper all your cows must be functional and long living. Regular trimming removes loose horn, levels soles and shortens toes, redistributing weight evenly and resulting in improved locomotion.
This means improved Dry Matter Intake, better rumen function, and consequently more milk.
6. PHILIP JAMES FOOT TRIMMING
I am a skilled NACFT-qualified trimmer with vast experience over 20 years. I am now working two crushes with an assistant loading. All trimming is still carried out personally by me, but two crushes improve efficiency and saves your cows waiting around.
