The South Devon breed is enjoying a period of expansion, and recognition of its valuable commercial attributes – the most important of which, perhaps, is its very quiet temperament.
South Devons have firmly established themselves as a modern beef breed with strong maternal qualities, and are used widely by the commercial producer and pedigree breeder as suckler replacements, either pure or crossbred, and as terminal sires. They are versatile and adaptable, and suit a variety of types of management and production.
With high growth rates, they are efficient converters of grass and forage, and therefore suited to both extensive and intensive systems. The beef they produce is well-known as being marbled and tender, qualities sought by the butcher, along with length and width.
A recent announcement that His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has accepted an invitation to become the breed’s Patron for the next five years has been warmly greeted by the Society, as recognition of the breed’s standing.
