Birchgrove is located between the flood plain of the River Tawe and Drummau Mountain, the latter providing spectacular views across the Bristol Channel. The village has both a primary school and large secondary school. The community of Glais is adjacent to Clydach and within easy reach of the M4, with a post office, church, primary school and rugby club. Glais is roughly split into two halves – west of Birchgrove Road falls under the Clydach ward and Gower constituency, while east of it comes under Llansamlet ward and Swansea East constituency.
Llansamlet is named after a saint - Saint Samlet. There is a Saint Samlet's Church in the area on Church Road. Ruth Madoc, star of the TV show Hi-de-Hi! grew up here. With easy access to the M4, Llansamlet has its own railway station. The area has plenty of shops, schools, health facilities and a library. It also borders the Swansea Enterprise Park with its vast range of retail businesses.
To the north east of the city centre, Trallwn has a primary school. It is a short distance from Llansamlet and the Enterprise Park.
