All set for the switchover

FROM April 2009 we will experience the biggest change in our choice of television channels since the introduction of colour television in 1969.

In the South Devon area, fed by the Beacon Hill transmitter we will lose the four traditional analogue TV channels and we must prepare for this, otherwise we will just have ‘snow’ on our screens.

If you have Sky, cable or a Freeview receiver then you will have TV reception after the analogue switch off. But what about your video recorder, the small TVs in the kitchen and in bedrooms? Very likely these will have an analogue tuner only and will receive nothing after April 2009 without a digital box, such as Freeview, for each one.

Your old video recorder will still play your existing tapes but you will only be able to record new programmes if you feed the video from a digital box; yet another remote control. A better alternative for Sky users is to upgrade to Sky+; alternatively a hard drive Freeview recorder is a good bet and without monthly subscription.
