Central Church, Methodist & URC,
Torhill Road, Torquay
At Central Church we like to link Christmas with Easter, Celebrating the life of Jesus from his birth to his death and his Resurrection. To do this, we have fashioned our Christmas tree from
last year, into a rough cross. During our services throughout Lent, some symbols of events that stand out in the ministry of Jesus, are placed on and around the cross, including a branch
of a fig tree, a towel and basin, a palm branch, a donkey, a purple robe, a whip and a crown of thorns.
Easter Services
Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, will begin with the morning service at 10.30am led by the minister Rev’d Glyn Millington, and will include a palm waving procession for the children. It will conclude the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The evening service will be a United Service arranged by Christians Together in Torquay, where the preacher will be Mr Dennis King, a Former Chaplain of the South Devon Technical College.

On Good Friday during the morning service at 10.30am, led by Rev’d Glyn Millington, the cross will be stripped bare, except for the crown of thorns, and nails will be hammered into the wood. This is an effective way of reminding us of the pain and suffering at the Crucifixion of our Lord. On Easter Sunday, symbolic of the joy of the Resurrection and new life to come, members of the congregation will bring flowers to fix to the cross to transform the bare wood to a blaze of colour and beauty.
There will be a Prayer Meeting on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Maundy Thursday morning of Holy Week at 9.30am. At 7.30pm on Maundy Thursday the annual United Service for all will be held this year at St. Luke’s Church.
Easter Sunday morning will begin will Holy Communion at 8.00am and followed by the decoration of the cross service at 10.30am and will also include Holy Communion. The evening service at 6.30pm will take the form of an Easter Praise. A chance to sing those well loved Easter Hymns!
Please feel free to join with us to remember the death, and celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord at any of our services (and don’t forget to bring a flower on Easter morning!)
