Valentine’s Day is still a bit of a mystery anyway, although most sources indicate Valentine was a priest in ancient Rome who married young lovers in secret as weddings were outlawed by the emperor in an attempt to keep his soldiers loyal.
Valentine was thrown in jail for the rest of his life for this act of treason.

Although a priest he apparently fell in love with a girl who visited him and, just before he died, he wrote her a letter signed: “From your Valentine”, an expression Hallmark cards are no doubt very grateful to him for leaving to the world.

Valentine’s Day falls on a Thursday this year but if you are planning a leap year proposal you could be celebrating right up until
the end of the month.
