Part of the Bay for 150 years

ON March 30, 2008, Rossiters department store celebrated 150 years of trading and service to the people of Torbay and beyond.

The company was started in very small premises in Winner Street, Paignton in 1858. Unusually for the time it was two sisters, Sarah and Jane Rossiter who opened the business. While the business was still ‘young’ Jane left to get married, the other — Sarah — remained involved with the business until her death and descendants of hers have continued to run the business ever since.

Originally the business was almost exclusively dressmaking and haberdashery as both sisters were seamstresses.

We have come a long way since 1858. The telephone, television the aeroplane and the car have been invented. We have had two world wars and men have walked on the moon. 150 years on, and Rossiters still seek to provide a good place to shop and a good place to work for an increasingly widening “community”. We are very proud of our heritage, but we embrace and welcome the future and the challenges it may bring.

Like all businesses we will only survive and prosper if we provide what our customers want. Rossiters is therefore continuing to strengthen our traditional high benchmark for customer service and support for the community in which we live and work. We intend to develop the services and goods we deliver to our customers. We will always endeavour to find interesting, good quality and value for money products and to provide a relaxed and pleasant shopping experience in store.

Rossiters, is for you and for your home. Our Gifts Department will always have that something special. Choose from a wide range of small or large gifts, including toiletries, prints and photo frames. We stock fine gifts for him, for her and for the home.

Our Kitchen Department stocks a great variety of kitchenware for you including saucepans, woks, cutlery, dinner sets, knife blocks, waste bins and small appliances. Our Linens and Soft furnishing Departments have bed linens, bathroom accessories and a selection of ready made and ‘custom’ made curtains. Also available are net curtains to complete and complement your windows.

If you wish to furnish your home, then our Furniture Department has beds, suites, dining sets, occasional furniture and relaxing chair options, including rise and lower chairs for those who have difficulty getting ‘up and down’.

For you our Ladies Wear Department has the latest ladies fashions for the new season in stock, from Gerry Weber, Esprit and Mexx. New season stock is also available in our nightwear and swimwear ranges, and our Lingerie Department has trained staff to assist you in fitting and selection of our beautifully co-ordinated lingerie.

For you we have the latest men’s fashions including ranges from Ben Sherman, Gabicci, Farah and Wolsey. A great selection of shirts, trousers, jeans and jackets are always available. We have fashion accessories, umbrellas, jewellery, handbags and even the luggage for your holidays.

So come and see us soon, browse through three floors of great products for you and for your home. Relax and take a break in our C2 Coffee Shop, eat in or take away venue on the ground floor.
